“Missing Martin,” the Antiseptic Hero

January 21, 2008

I hope everyone has had the opportunity to truly celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today. I encourage everyone to read this reflection on King, the antiseptic hero of today’s stratified society.  Let’s not forget that King demanded a radical restructuring of society’s architecture, something we all can work toward achieving.

During MLK Jr. Day I have made a habit of watching/listening to some speeches and rereading some of his works. When I see just how radical his ideas really are (taking on the oppressive economics of capitalism in “Where do we go from here?”), and how little we heed them today, I am reminded of the Agee quote: “The deadliest blow the enemy of the human soul can strike is to do fury honor.” We have honored MLK Jr. to death.
