Soldiers for Christ After All?

December 11, 2007

Like many people, I am saddened to hear of the recent shooting at Colorado Springs’ New Life Church. New Life has been in the headlines off an on for at least two years. It’s the church of Ted Haggard, former President of the National Association of Evangelicals and former pastor of the church who took the evangelical walk of shame after having admitted to drug use and association with a male prostitute.

Jeff Sharlet featured New Life Church in a 2005 Harper’s Magazine article entitled, “Soldiers for Christ.”  The article profiles the general worldview of New Life Church, which sees itself in a mythical battle against the forces of evil that reign in the world.  While I’m sad to see that an assailant has opened fire in the concourse of New Life, I’m also startled to hear that “beefed up” armed church security guards shot the assailant dead.  Perhaps this incident will give rise to the evangelical culture of victimhood that it has so carefully cultivated.
